True
cross-platform, multi-format loudness metering
|
The most fundamental question in audio production, how loud is it?
Simple and yet elusive, with loudness inconsistency and
incompatibilities present every day in broadcasts across the world.
With
detailed, objective loudness measurement, history and logging
facilities, VisLM provides a simple, ITU, ATSC and EBU standard
compliant*
way to measure, compare and
contrast loudness during production, broadcast and post production, on
the fly or for entire sections of audio.
VisLM introduces several essential parameters for audio measurement.
- True-Peak level metering
(inter-sample accurate level monitoring)
- Loudness Range (to help decide if
and how much dynamic compression to apply)
- Momentary 'instantaneous loudness'
for mixing by ear
- Short term loudness (3 second time
window)
- Program Loudness (long term
integrated loudness measurement)

Loudness metering |
Standardised, intuitive loudness compatibility
|
|
|
Standardized
loudness
metering represents the next generation of audio 'volume' control,
moving beyond the digital consideration of level and into
objective perceived loudness - Loudness is the sound level people
actually 'hear'. The NUGEN Audio VisLM loudness meter is a step closer
to the perfect loudness measurement tool: the human ear.
"Loudness
jumps and inconsistencies are the most common technical complaints
listeners and viewers of broadcast programs have... Switching to
loudness metering and normalization is a breakthrough in providing a
more consistent, and thus more pleasant, listening experience"
Florian Camerer | Sound Engineer, ORF TV | chairman EBU P/LOUD

Maximum True Peak Level metering
|
|
|
The True Peak Level of an audio signal is the maximum value of the
signal, Sample Peak and QPPM (Quasi-Peak Program Meter) Meters do not
measure this level with accuracy as they miss the true peaks which
potentially lie between samples. The implementation of True Peak
metering to BS. 1770 allows these inter-sample peaks to be detected.
VisLM provides true peak metering for all audio channels from a single
mono source through to 5.1 surround production.

Practical
Applications - Loudness normalisation for the whole production
& broadcast chain
|
Loudness
normalization introduces a common reference point for all stages of
audio production, allowing audio professionals to remain in control of
audio quality and meet current & proposed legislation.
Post production
- Objectively measure constituent loudness
values
- Achieve average loudness harmonization
from differing sources
- Balance music/dialog/special effects
VisLM
simplifies the process of harmonizing dialog, music and sound effects
by allowing objective comparison of both loudness and loudness range (a
measure of the consistency of signal loudness), making the process of
loudness harmonization more rapid and reliable than ever before. As
well
as assisting in the balancing of different aspects of the soundscape,
VisLM can be used to quickly match recordings in different settings
(eg. documentary production, film soundtrack work) creating a more
consistent, harmonious listening experience.
Mixing | Mastering
- Take control of audio quality at source
- Avoid 'level shifting' further down the
broadcast stream
- Produce consistent masters
- Match average loudness across compilation
productions
- Preserve audio fidelity using True Peak
level meters
With
the introduction of recent legislation and the adoption of
new international standards loudness metering has become a
requirement for broadcasters the world over. To comply with
technical requirements, audio that does not meet target loudness
requirements will be 'level shifted' to maintain the channel average
loudness profile, which with current leveling practice will mean that
the audio is will probably be 'turned down'. To avoid this, loudness
control and normalization should be adopted.
Broadcast
| Transmission
- Harmonize program content
- Achieve loudness consistency within
channel
- Maintain loudness consistency across
channels
- Meet recent legislation and adopted
standards
- Manage live broadcast levels rapidly and
objectively
- Consistently balance
music/dialog/special effects
- Perform station monitoring and historical
diagnostic
Loudness
metering finally allows broadcasters to achieve consistent levels of
average loudness within and between channels. It is possible to measure
and harmonize the relative average levels of all types of program
material, be it music, live broadcast, dialog, advertising or effects
leading to a better listening experience and complying with recent
legislation (CALM Act etc.). VisLM is also
capable of providing detailed historical log files to allow station
postmortems (eg. checking the consistency of shared services, locally
inserted content etc.)
